Laing's (Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing) ideas represent a radical and revolutionary departure from mainstream thinking. The "sane" are not really sane, and the psychotics are not as mad as they appear to be. Modern society is founded on denial of the self and of experience; it is dangerously insane, and the psychotics, finding its values and norms unbearable, are not able to adjust to them.
